THE WORLD CUP, HERE WE COME
Get ready for plenty of stories and opinions on View From the Front Row
Good morning, good afternoon or good evening, to all my subscribers.
I wanted to let you know that View From the Front Row will be covering the World Cup very closely over the next 45 days.
In fact, I will be on the west coast, covering the U.S. men’s national team in its three group stage matches.
View From the Front Row will have analysis and opinions from myself and with a unique twist of different types of feature stories, whether it is an historical perspective, a unique and different feature story about the U.S. squad or something interesting around the World Cup. I wish I could tell you some of the ones that will be posted in the next week, but I want to keep them under wraps for now.
If you are a paid subscriber, I truly appreciate your loyalty over the past two years and I hope you continue to follow me. If you are a free subscriber, you might want to become a paid subscriber because many of the stories appearing on this Substack might be restricted over the next two months.
Anyone can be a paid subscriber. A special World Cup full year subscription has been created at ($40), which can be found at

Covering a World Cup in this day and age is not inexpensive. So, the more paid subscribers, the better, to help defray the cost.
If you are unfamiliar with my background, I’ll fill you in.
I have been around the block and some about the World Cup.
This will be my ninth men’s World Cup (14 overall if you count five women’s World Cups), having attended and written about Mexico ‘86 (and yes, I was at the Hand of God Goal game, and I am still waiting for the linesman to lift his flag on the play). Heck, I have been fortunate to attend all three England-Argentina confrontations since then, including the good and bad moments for David Beckham (1998 and 2002).
Without breaking my arm while patting myself on the back, I don’t know there are many American journalists who can put such a perspective, historical and current, on the tournament.
I have written five books about the World Cup. The most recent one was just published:
Around the World Cup in 40 Years
An American sportswriter’s perspective
I hope you enjoy the World Cup.
Yours in soccer,
Michael Lewis
